Living the designer mentality

I don’t have a formal degree in design. But I was born into good taste. Taste is subjective, but I do believe I inherited a general sense of what looks good traditionally from my mom.

How it matters today is that when I design Squarespace websites, I am able to look at a section and determine a scale, spatial relationships between elements, font pairings, color matching and other factors that make a website look good. I encourage my clients to go with a look that tends towards timelessness.

What does that mean?

Let’s take men’s pants as an example. The look that will withstand the test of time is a pair of pants that is loosely frames the wearer’s legs, not too tight and not too baggy. That look is what I strive for in my Squarespace website designs.

I do love the expression: How you do anything is how you do everything. It’s a mindset that one must embody a philosophy of good design in every aspect of one’s life.

  • I pay attention to the spaces I inhabit. Is my small apartment set up in a way that brings me joy? Is it visually pleasing and inviting at the same time? Most of us spend a lot of time at home, so it’s important that time is spent in an environment that is rejuvenating.

  • I have a collection of clothing that is mostly in navy, grey and black. This makes it easy to get dressed well. I also know what items of clothing work for my personal style, so a lot of crewneck sweatshirts and not many button up shirts.

  • I regularly look at photographs of cars, homes, bicycles and other arenas where design is a major factor towards a successful execution.
